The Data Problem

You don't fully know your market, nevermind the timing.

Everything downstream of GTM like segmentation, targeting, personalisation, and campaign relevance, depends on data that's specific, current, and legally sourced. Here's where it usually breaks.

Where it breaks

Most ICPs start life as a positioning exercise: what the product team believes the ideal client looks like. That's a reasonable starting point, but it's not the same as an ICP defined from the data on who actually buys, renews, and expands.

Even a well-built ICP is still attributes on paper. You know the size, industry, geography, stack, and growth signals, but struggle to come up with the actual names, accurately and affordably. Turning those attributes into a real, reachable, economically-viable list of companies is the hard part, and it's what determines whether the ICP returns value.

A single contact record answers who to email. It doesn't answer who else in the account influences, blocks, or approves the decision. When it comes to B2B enterprise, multiple stakeholders get involved, and several of them never fill in a form.

People change roles, companies restructure, emails bounce. A CRM full of contacts isn't the same as a CRM full of current, verified ones, and the gap between the two grows every quarter nobody actively closes it.

In Europe, GDPR and national equivalents add a compliance layer most US-built tools and playbooks weren't designed around. The data challenge here is both technical and legal, and getting it wrong is expensive.

Signals are the signs you need to begin selling. Without them, even a perfectly accurate contact record won't earn a response, because nothing in the message tells them why what you're selling is relevant, now.

What actually needs to happen

Fixing the data problem in four steps:

01

Know what you don't know.

Gain tools to research and understand your target audience before they contact you, not afterwards.

02

Buy in a controlled, economical way.

Trusting a single data vendor rarely holds up. You need options, and the ability to choose between them.

03

Enrich and verify, continuously.

Inform your overall picture of the buying groups that matter rather than isolated customer personas.

04

Build compliance into the sourcing logic.

Not bolted on after the fact.

This is where a platform like Clay delivers value, but can also make matters worse in the wrong hands. We break down exactly how, and where LeadFabric fits, on the next page.

This is one of three connected problems.

Data rarely fails on its own. It usually shows up alongside disconnected systems or campaigns that fire too late. Take a look at how to tackle the other two challenges.
